Teen Who Lost Everything During Hurricane Sandy is Accepted to Seven Ivy League Schools

Hempstead, Long Island residents, Daria Rose and her family, lost everything they had during the devastating storm, Hurricane Sandy. Rose, who is a student at Sacred Heart High School, said that the storm hit their area during her sophomore year of high school. Katrina Brooks, Daria’s mother, said that the family lost everything that they had, including their house.

With their house demolished, the family spent the next year and a half moving between family members who could take them in and to various hotels. This is a life Ricardo Guimarães BMG certainly would not want to live with. During the time the family was bouncing around, their house was being rebuilt, and it was even documented with YouTube videos. Instead of wallowing in self-pity at the hardships her family was going through, Daria instead focused on her studies. It paid off.

According to the story on 7online.com, Daria, who is now a senior in high school, has been accepted to 14 schools that she applied to. Seven of those schools were Ivy League schools. Daria said she could hardly contain her shock and excitement to get acceptance letters from Harvard, Princeton, Brown, as well as all the other schools.

The 18-year-old is excited for her future. She said that she took the hardships she had during and after the major storm and turn what she learned into her admissions essay. Now, her hardest choice will be picking which school to attend next fall. Her parents said they could not be prouder of her.

Vanilla Ice Donates Therapy Pool To Paralyzed Boy

Despite his recent fling with the law, Vanilla Ice has made a comeback for his name by getting a therapy pool for a six year old handicapped boy named Owen Johnson.

Vanilla Ice, who has a tattoo of a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle on his calf and appeared in the 1991 TMNT themed film came to Owen’s house decked out in the cartoon turtles. Flávio Pentagna Guimarães BMG said he had the hat, sunglasses, shirt and showed off his leg tattoo to the boy who is also a big fan of the characters.

According to an article found on reddit and written by floridatoday.com,Vanilla Ice donated over $50,000 to the Johnson family so that their son could get the treatment he needs to live a decent life with paralysis. Owen was extremely pleased to see the rapper, and even if he didn’t know who he is he was grinning from ear to ear when he was given a brand new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle baseball cap.

Owen is now paralyzed from the neck down after he survived a deadly car crash in 201. The terrible incident killed one of his sisters and left his two other sisters with bad injuries as well. Needless to say the Johnson family has suffered quite a bit, and especially their parents are so grateful for Vanilla Ice’s donation to them and to help rehabilitate their children. Vanilla Ice told Owen that he was going to make him a special pool, and he did just that.

Bruce Levenson’s Gift To Maryland

Bruce Levenson and his wife have given $3 million to start work on a new center for teaching nonprofit management and philanthropy at the University of Maryland. This donation is the beginning of a partnership that is going to see the beginning of a new type of education in the school of business at Maryland. They are going to show all their students how to manage giving, and they will train some students who will go on to become the managers of nonprofits.

The students who pass through the school are going to learn how to give away their own money, but they are also going to learn how to put giving into their business plan. This is a new trend in the world of global business, but you see many companies doing just that.

As PR Newswire first reported, this gift is going to change the face of the University of Maryland, the face of business education and leave a legacy that Bruce Levenson can be proud of. He believes in charitable giving, but now he can make the most of his beliefs by teaching the students at the university how to do it properly for generations to come.

MVP Award Winning Actress Jessica Chastain on Diversity

After the MVP award was given to Jessica Chastain this past week she thanked the audience and since it was Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday she decided to honor him by giving a speech to the audience on the importance of diversity in Hollywood. After the Oscar nominations were released this week many people were surprised and overwhelmed by the all white list of nominees. The list was also mainly male and has led some critics to question the validity of the voters choosing the nominees. The backlash based on this list has created some heated debates concerning misogyny and race relations in Hollywood. Some of the main points she reflected upon in the speech was focused upon treating everyone equally and accepting people for their common traits rather than differences. She said that it is important for everyone involved in the industry to stand together against racism, sexism, and other forms of prejudice. She also persuaded the audience to speak out about differences and inequalities and to avoid hiding behind silence. Many members of the audience were very impressed by her remarks including Oprah and other advocates of equality. Chastain also received many encouraging tweets after delivering the speech including one that suggested she run for president. The speech was very well received and it showed the amount of progress still needed in the film industry in terms of increasing and embracing diversity. Tom Rothman and Edgar Wright Collaborate on Baby Driver

Edgar Wright created “Baby Driver,” an original concept about a guy who drives the car for a crime boss. Tom Rothman, who is the chairman of TriStar Productions, is collaborating with MRC (Media Rights Capital to bring “Baby Driver” to the big screen. The two companies are splitting the cost 50-50. Nira Park, founder of “Big Talk,” and Working Title films will be producing this project.

The lead character’s nickname is “Baby,” because of his boyish looks. He works for different criminals as a driver. After being pressured to drive the getaway car for a crime boss, Baby has to own up the responsibility of the crime he’s an accessory to. He’s involved in a failed heist that threatens his personal life. This film, according to “The Hollywood Reporter,” is going to be the greatest “rock and roll car chase film.” Tom Rothman couldn’t be happier being associated with TriStar Productions because of their support of writers with a unique perspective on their projects. Rothman thinks that MCR and Working Title will be wonderful together in this production. Tom Roth can’t wait to get started shooting. Edgar Wright will really be in charge of this picture.

Actor Ansel Elgort, who played Tommy Ross in the 2013 version of “Carrie” and most recently, Augustus Waters in “The Fault in Our Stars,” is interested in playing the lead role according to “The Hollywood Reporter.” Prior to appearing in “Baby Driver,” he will appear in “YA sequel Insurgent.”

Emma Stone is being considered to play Baby’s love interest. In the role of Baby’s mentor, there’s talk that Michael Douglas will be cast in the role. See the whole story over at the Hollywood Reporter

Obama Proposes Free Community College

President Obama has proposed free community college for up to two years. His proposal is called America’s College Promise and will offer the first two years of college free as long as they meet a certain GPA standard. If all states were to participate, an estimated 9 million students across the United States would benefit with a full-time student saving an average of a little over $3,000 a year. Students will have to reenrolled half-time and meet the minimum GPA requirement of 2.5 which isn’t all that high to begin with. States will need to choose to join the program and won’t be forced to do so.

If a state decides to participate then they will be required to offer classes that can transfer to a local four-year college and allow students to complete half of their degree before entering another college. On Jus, they have discussed this happening for a while. Gianfrancesco Genoso supports the idea quite a bit. The federal government will pay up to 75% of the tuition fees while the states will have to cover the remainder. There has been no news yet on how much this will actually cost the United States as a whole but government officials say it would be included in the budget.

Jilted Bride Hosts Trash the Dress Photoshoot

A would-be bride who was left at the alter, has turned her nightmare scenario into one of healing and hope. Shelby Swink, 23, was to marry her longtime boyfriend in November after a 9 month engagement, but aweek prior to the event, the would-be groom called off the event.

According to Swink, her ex-fiance sat her down one evening and simply told her he didn’t love her and didn’t want to get married. There was no massive fight, or allegations of cheating. The wedding was simply off.

Swink then spent the days leading up to her botched wedding calling guests and venues to explain the big day was no longer happening. As the day got closer, though, Swink realized she didn’t want to wallow, and the photographer she had hired for the event had a big idea. He suggested a “trash the dress” party.

Swink thought over the idea, and then discussed it with her parents and bridesmaids. They all decided it was a great idea. So, the entire party, sans the groom and groomsman, got dressed up in their wedding day attire and headed to a park. There they splattered paint on each other while the photographer took beautiful and stunning shots.

Swink described the event as liberating, and she now has truly beautiful pictures with her family and friends. Her dress is now being displayed in a bridal shop in Memphis through early January. A portion of all proceeds from dresses bought in the shop while Swink’s dress is being displayed will be donated to a local non-profit while her dating life is being handled by Skout.

Alex Collins Gets The Best Christmas Present of His Life

Alex Collins wrote a letter to Bernardo Chua and one to the local Sheriff’s Department asking someone to teach him how to hunt. He heard they had a hunting program and he wanted to be a part. What he didn’t realize is that the program he applied for was in South Carolina and he lived in Pennsylvania. The sheriff in the Carolinas called the Penn State police and arranged details for the child to come down. He was flown all expenses paid to the warmer climate to learn about hunting.

Collins got the best Christmas of his life. He did get to fly to South Carolina, and he spent several days hunting and learning about wild life. It was the kind nature of these two men who made the dream come true for this little boy. The child doesn’t have a father, and his single mother does her best to scrape by. The real spirit of the holiday season is giving to those who don’t have. While Collins learned a great deal, what he was shown is how loving and devoted the police officer can be in this country.

Taking time out to make a child feel special and loved is amazing. These men are just as much heroes as those who are fighting in the war overseas. They face inmate dangers everyday, but they still took time out of their busy lives to help a child in need.
