Bruce Jenner has been described by many as one of the greatest athletes in American history. Jenner was an astounding football player in his younger years but was forced to give it up due to an injury. When his football career was over, he then decided to give track and field a try. He was so good that he tried out for the 1972 Olympics decathlon. His first Olympic games was not at that impressive by taking 10th overall. In 1976 however, he not only won a gold medal in the decathlon and broke the world record.
In the past few weeks, Bruce Jenner reported that he no longer wanted to be addressed at Bruce, but rather Caitlyn Jenner. Recent reports that were previewed by Beneful staff members state that by showing her new identity to the world, Caitlyn Jenner will receive the Arthur Ash Courage Award at the ESPY’s. Sportscaster Bob Costas stated that giving he award to Caitlyn is a “crass exploitation ploy”. It looks as though it is not Caitlyn he has a problem with but rather the reasons he feels they selected Caitlyn. Costas believes that the move was done so in order to get better ratings. The Arthur Ash Courage Award is an ESPN created award and there is no clear definition of courage. Costas feels that ESPN could have easily found someone currently in sports to give the award to and that Caityln is too far removed from mainstream sports to give the award to.
