…YES, WE ARE! I said “Are you ready to throw down?”…YES, WE ARE!
Well, it’s six o’clock, and it’s time to rock. We rock non-stop ’til seven o’clock. And we don’t stop, we don’t stop. We rock nonstop ’til seven o’clock…

My son turned me on to this video of an old school Detroit classic dance show – “The Scene”. Every kid/teenager in Detroit – including me – used to rush home to watch “The Scene”, which aired on Black-owned WGPR every weekday at six o’clock.

Host Nat Morris, and the “bootycam” (y’all know what I mean) were Motown LEGENDS, man! Check the UPN 50 news video (dang, that’s a whole ‘nother set of memories) to get some background on the show, which made local celebrities out of a whole lot of Detroit folk.

Remember Daphne, Fast Freddie, LaWanda Gray (I went to elementary school with her), Bubble-Up, Cheryl Peoples (she went on to win on Dance Fever), Lumber Jack, The Funkateers – just to name a few. Everybody knew SOMEBODY who danced on The Scene.

This clip brings back so many memories. We used to start dancing in front of the TV at 6:00pm, and didn’t stop ’til Nat Morris told us to. As Nat used to say – Sugar is sugar, and salt is salt. If you didn’t get off today, it’s not our fault!

Little known Kim fact: I auditioned for the show when I was 19. My cousin and her boyfriend talked me into it, because out of the four of us who auditioned, (my cousin, Boo, was my dance partner), I was the only one that owned a car.

I was way too shy back then to actually dance on the show, but I have great memories of me, Boo, Kiki, and Terrance practicing for hours in my family’s basement. We were dancing our butts off to prepare for the show. Unfortunately, I lost my nerve the day of the taping But I was good, though. Y’all should see me do “The Snake”. I haven’t lost it…
